How BetterHelp Works

1

Fill out a questionnaire to help us assess your needs and get matched to a BetterHelp therapist.

Free Online Therapy

Message your therapist whenever and wherever through our website or mobile app.

3

Not happy with your counselor? Request a new therapist at any time.

How to Sign Up

  • When you finish the questionnaire, you will need to sign up for an account. You will have to provide an email address, but you don't need to use your real name. BetterHelp even gives you the option of using an alias.

  • After you've signed up for an account, BetterHelp will ask you a few more questions about the type of therapist you are looking for. They will also give you a chance to describe what is currently bothering you - a message your therapist will read upon being matched with you.

  • After you've completed these final questions, you will be led to a secure payment page. After entering your payment information, BetterHelp will feed your answers into their powerful algorithm and match you with one of their therapists. If you do not like your match, you can request a change at anytime. From my experience, the vast majority of users are happy with their match.

  • After being matched with a therapist, you will have access to a secure and dedicated chat room. This room is always open, and while you shouldn't expect a real-time response from your therapist they do reply in a timely manner.

  • For real-time communication, you will have the option to set up sessions. These sessions can be via chat or you can schedule a phone or video session.

Pricing

  • The price of BetterHelp compares quite favorably to that of face-to-face therapy. Pricing varies a bit depending on your location, between $35-$65 per week. We asked around and found that most typically pay $45 per week. Compare this to the typical $75-$150 per session cost of face-to-face therapy and BetterHelp truly comes out ahead.

User Experience

  • Once you log in to your account, you will find yourself in your dedicated chat room. It functions like any traditional chat room, except that you don't need to be in it to see a response. When your therapist responds to your message, you will receive an e-mail notification alerting you to your therapist's reply.

  • What truly makes BetterHelp the industry standard is the seamless transition between your desktop and your mobile device. By downloading the BetterHelp app on your iPhone or Android, you can access the full functionality of the service while on-the-go.

Confidentiality and Security

BetterHelp has enacted numerous features to ensure all your information is confidential, private and secure. This includes;

  • Browsing encryption provided by Comodo, an industry leader in data security.

  • Bank grade 256-bit encryption to fully encrypt your communications with your therapist.

  • Fully compliant with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)

  • Backing from Mental Health America and the International Society for Mental Health Online

Counselor Qualifications and Areas of Expertise

BetterHelp's counselors are licensed, trained, experienced, and accredited psychologists (PhD / PsyD), marriage and family therapists (LMFT), clinical social workers (LCSW / LMSW), or licensed professional counselors (LPC). All of them have a Masters Degree or a Doctorate Degree in their field. While their experience, expertise and background vary, they all possess at least 3 years and 2,000 hours of hands-on experience.
