  • BetterHelp is the industry leader in online therapy. Founded in 2013 and acquired by Teladoc, they have over 30,000 licensed therapists using their platform at the time of writing.

BetterHelp is the largest online counseling platform in the world. Founded in 2013, it's grown to over 1,000,000 users and 30,000 licensed counselors. It's technology, ease-of-use, and customization led to it's rapid growth and eventual acquisition in 2015 by Teladoc - the online telehealth company.

Getting Started

When you first visit BetterHelp, you will be greeted by a questionnaire. Honestly, it's a terrific starting point. You'll be asked a series of questions designed to identify what you are struggling with. BetterHelp uses this information to help match you with one of their counselors, so be sure to answer these questions thoughtfully.

When you finish the questionnaire, you will need to sign up for an account.

After you've signed up for an account, BetterHelp will ask you a few more questions about the type of therapist you are looking for. They will also give you a chance to describe what is currently bothering you - a message your therapist will read upon being matched with you.

After you've completed these final questions, you will be led to a payment page. After entering your payment information, BetterHelp will match you with one of their therapists. If you do not like your match, you can request a change. From my experience, many users are happy with their first match, but it is also normal to switch to find the best match.

After being matched with a therapist, you will have access to communicate with them. While you shouldn't expect a real-time response from your therapist they do reply in a timely manner.

For real-time communication, you will have the option to set up sessions. These sessions can be via chat or you can schedule a phone or video session.

Pricing

The price of BetterHelp compares quite favorably to that of face-to-face therapy. Pricing varies a bit depending on your location, typically between $65-$95 per week but check their FAQ here for most up-to-date pricing. Compare this to the typical $75-$150 per sessionĀ cost of face-to-face therapy and BetterHelp truly comes out ahead.

User Experience

Once you log in to your account, you will find yourself able to connect with your therapist and schedule sessions.

What truly makes BetterHelp the industry standard is the seamless transition between your desktop and your mobile device. By downloading the BetterHelp app on your iPhone or Android, you can access the full functionality of the service while on-the-go.

They have been qualified and certified by their state's professional board after successfully completing the necessary education, exams, training and practice. While their experience, expertise, and background vary, they all possess at least 3 years and 1,000 hours of hands-on experience.
